Birth Control Q & A

What Types of Birth Control Are Available?

Today, there are many options for birth control, including birth control pills, IUDs (intrauterine devices), diaphragms (flexible “caps” that fit snugly over the cervix) and arm implants that release hormones over time. Permanent options including tubal ligation and Essure® sterilization are also available.

How Can I Decide What Type of Birth Control is Right For Me?

The choice of a birth control method is a highly personal one, and should be based on which method feels most comfortable for your needs. Ideally, you want a method that's most convenient for your lifestyle so you use it on a regular basis. The best way to learn about all your options is to schedule an office exam so you can review the different methods and discuss your health and lifestyle needs.

What Happens During IUD Insertion?

IUDs are small T-shaped devices that are inserted into the uterus through the cervix. The broader top portion holds the IUD in place. IUDs are made of copper, which helps the uterus produce a fluid that's toxic to sperm, and some IUDs also release hormones to help prevent pregnancy. Insertion is performed during an office exam in much the same way as a pelvic exam. You'll lie on your back on the exam table and a speculum will be used to widen the vaginal canal. The IUD will be inserted through the cervix in a procedure that takes just a few moments. In some cases, the cervix may be numbed first to prevent any discomfort. Once in place, a long plastic “tail” will extend into the vaginal canal. The tail will be used to remove the IUD in the doctor's office in the future, and it also helps ensure the IUD is in place prior to having sex.

How is a Diaphragm Fitted?

Diaphragms are fitted during a routine office visit using a technique similar to a pelvic exam. Different sizes of diaphragms will be “tried on” your cervix to ensure the best fit. You'll also have an opportunity to put the diaphragm in place during your visit to ensure you're placing it properly.
