Essure® Q & A

What is Essure® Sterilization?

Essure® sterilization is a type of permanent birth control that uses an implanted coil to prevent the eggs from descending from the ovaries and to keep sperm from fertilizing the eggs. The tiny coils are implanted inside the fallopian tubes which carry the eggs from the ovaries to the uterus. Once implanted, the coils cause a mild irritation that initiates the formation of scar tissue. Over time, scar tissue forms a natural barrier that prevents eggs and sperm from “meeting” so fertilization cannot occur. Essure® is FDA approved and has been shown to be more than 99 percent effective in preventing pregnancy.

How is Essure® Sterilization Performed?

The Essure® devices can be implanted in an in-office outpatient procedure that takes about 10 to 15 minutes to perform. During the procedure, you'll lie on your back on the exam table and the coils will be inserted through your vagina with no need for incisions or general anesthesia. Because Essure® does not use hormones, there are no hormone-related risks when using this method of birth control.

How Can I Be Sure Essure® is Working?

After the tiny Essure® coils are in place inside the fallopian tubes, it takes some time for the scar tissue to completely form around them. About three months after the coils are implanted, you'll have a simple imaging test using ultrasound or x-rays to look for the presence of scar tissue inside your fallopian tubes. Once confirmed, you can feel confident the method is working to prevent pregnancy. If scar tissue has not completely formed by that time, you'll need to have a follow-up imaging test a few weeks later.

Can Essure® be Reversed?

No, Essure® is designed to provide permanent birth control, and you should only use it if you're sure you're done having children.

Is Essure® Covered By Insurance?
