Nexplanon® Q & A

What is NEXPLANON®?

NEXPLANON® is a birth control product that is implanted in your upper arm and which releases hormones over time to help prevent pregnancy. Under two inches in length, the NEXPLANON® implant can be inserted into your arm in a very simple procedure that takes just a few minutes to perform right in our office. The implant is designed to remain active for three years, after which it can be removed and replaced. Many women choose NEXPLANON® because of its convenience – no interaction is required to ensure it's working properly. Plus, although it's implanted just below the surface of the skin, it's not visible to others while it's in place.

How Does NEXPLANON® Work to Prevent Pregnancy?

NEXPLANON® releases a very small amount of a hormone product called progestin which enters the bloodstream and helps prevent pregnancy. Progestin is also used in birth control pills to achieve the same effect, preventing the release of the egg from the ovary while also preventing sperm from reaching the egg. The NEXPLANON® implant has been shown to be more than 99 percent effective in preventing unplanned pregnancy.

How is the NEXPLANON® Arm Implant Inserted?

Insertion is performed right in our office in just a few minutes. First, the skin on the upper arm is cleansed and numbed. Then a very small nick is made in the skin to enable the implant to be carefully inserted. Once in place, the insert will be invisible but wills till be able to be felt by gently pressing the surrounding skin. A pressure bandage will be placed over the insertion site to protect it while it heals.

How is the NEXPLANON® Implant Removed?

Removal is also performed in the office using a similar technique. A new implant can be inserted at the same time if you wish. The NEXPLANON® implant is designed to last for three years, but women who are obese may need to have the implant replaced more often.
